A private townhouse garden
Location: Rome, Italy
Year 2023
Description: The longitudinal (‘lengthwise’) layout of the garden, typical of terraced houses, was emphasised by monotonous footpaths and hedges at the borders that highlight the limits of a small garden instead of any potential micro landscape features.
The project on the other hand aims to structure this otherwise uniform space into three different ‘moments’: dining, next to the house; standing, in the center of the garden; and entrance, with an accompanying barbeque area at the back.
Architecturally, the alternation of ‘empty’ paved areas and ‘full’ shrub masses punctuates the space following different levels with the additional purpose of shifting the perception of the entrance gate away from the house.
The choice of plant species follows the differing sunlight: shade below the house with pittosporum and hydrangea, half-shade in the middle with Mediterranean species, and sun at the bottom where roses and a vegetable garden find their place.
