Description: On the large mown parkland overlooking Lake Lausanne and located at the south end of Denantou Park, an ocean of flowers emerges. The flowers flood the parkland as if they were water from the lake.
The emerging sea of flowers covers an area of about 1700m² and extends over a length of about 110m near the lakeside promenade establishing a relationship with the lake on a spatial scale. The depth, length and breadth of the garden scale down the large void that characterises this part of the park by combining a flowery surface and the horizon of water together into a visual perspective. The overall image is that of a wave sweeping up the slope of the park, wrapping around the sculpture. The visitor will be able to ‘surf’ the flowering wave through a path that makes for a pleasant detour from the existing promenade. The choice of plant species is based on a rigorous selection of plants that ensure blooming from June to October. The flowering wave consists of a mix of 20 percent herbs and 80 percent flowers. The grasses act as a binder that provide stability and cohesion to the flowers during different periods. The blooms consisting of a few varieties of annual and perennial seeds are strengthened by the planting of 15,000 perennial seedlings grown on in nursery trays, arranged in a pattern that follows the ripple of the wave. From a common palette of only four different plants, articulate and colorful compositions of plants draw the shadows, hues and foam of the wave. The choice of perennials is consistent with the sustainable management of public green spaces.
