TERRACOTTA

Private terrace in the historic center of Florence

Location: Florence, Italy

Year 2023

Description:  Above the rooftops of the historic center of Florence, a thin perimeter terrace connects the views and ancillary spaces of two apartments. The terraced area joins seemlessly with the pitches of the roofs that surround it, as if edged by a cloak of tiles and shingles.

Natural terracotta pots of different colors, shapes and sizes feature Mediterranean shrub species that fill the terrace, creating visual and functional backdrops. The custom-made furniture, lightweight and easily movable, is designed to provide the terrace with different configurations in order to enjoy the view, immersed in a cozy setting where pots and roof merge into a single landscape.

From the house, the first backdrop of shrubs, which almost obstructs the entrance to the terrace, connects the inside with the outside.

The elongated perspective of the slender terrace finds its focus in a naturally bearing olive tree just like the many found on the distant hills. The reminder of a shared landscape reinforces the desired atmosphere of peacefulness.
