De la Nature
30° Festival des jardins de Chaumont-sur Loire "Jardin Idéal"
Awards THE JURY’S DISTINCTION
Location Chaumont-sur-Loire, France
Year 2022
Description The project is inspired by the garden fresco decorating the walls of the nymphaeum of the Villa of Livia, wife of Emperor Augustus, in Rome.
The fresco depicts an airy and uninterrupted life-size sequence of colourful trees, shrubs, flowers and fruit, a kind of botanical catalogue that the unknown author of the painting may have had in mind as his ideal garden.
What makes the painting unique is the use of perspective to reproduce the effect of an infinite landscape, in accordance with precise scenographic principles. The meticulous details in the foreground slowly fade away in subsequent planes, blending into an abstract sky in the background.
The project uses the pictorial artifices of the fresco to construct a real garden, reproducing the archetypal and harmonious atmosphere of a 'garden idea' present in the imagination of each of us, so that the observer may indulge in the pleasant deception of the theatrical scene of a landscape.
